How does preload differ from prefetch in <link rel>?

Explanation

preload says "this resource is definitely needed now, start early" - e.g. a font or an LCP image discovered late. prefetch is a hint for the future, loaded during idle time. An unnecessary preload steals bandwidth from critical resources. There's also preconnect to set up a connection to a domain early.
